Following parameters are relevant for a functionally appropriate design of a given building project :
- Nature and magnitude of activities intended to be carried out in it,
- Social and cultural needs of users, e.g. based on religious, provincial or other allied factors,
- General climatic consideration, e.g. extremes of climate and catering to a rainy climate,
- Cost factor or affordability,
- On-site factors, e.g. geological conditions, existing facilities, undulating lands etc.,
- Off-site factors e.g. proximity to a beautiful garden, sea- shore, highway, railway station, market etc., and
- Technology available for construction, etc.
Steps in the Planning Process of a Building
It is just appropriate, in order to save on effort and cost, to follow a time-tested schedule of steps while planning a building, such as :
- Identify activities to be performed in the building;
- Determine as to how many persons will be engaged at a time;
- Estimate the space requirement for each activity;
- Identify the relationship among the activities;
- Identify the constraints (cost, climate, site condition, regulations of local bodies etc.);
- Prepare a diagrammatic design of the building;
- Translate this diagram into actual plan by computing the prescribed dimensions and areas;
- Prepare from this building design, the plan, elevation, section etc.; and
- Test the design against requirements and constraints till a satisfactory solution is found.
