Insulation with Reference to Air Conditioning

To minimize the magnitude of pipe heat losses and gains, and to prevent condensation on cold pipes, insulation is frequently required for the ducts of an air conditioner. Pipe insulation is of two general types: rigid sections and soft blanket wrapper material. All insulated cold pipes should also be covered with a vapour barrier.

Vegetable or rock cork, wool and hair felt are used for insulation. Insulation on low temperature piping, as pointed out, must be vapour tight to prevent water vapour migration to the cold pipe surface and consequent condensation. To protect the pipe against corrosion from condensation, it should be painted before insulation is applied with a vapour barrier, such as asphalt base primer.
