Corrosion Control Methods

Chemical Inhibitors

A  corrosion inhibitor is an admixture to the concrete, used to prevent the corrosion of embedded metal. The mechanism of inhibition is complex aid there is no general theory applicable to all situations. The compound groups are primarily chromates, phosphates, hypophosphites, alkalies, nitrites, and fluorides.

Cathodic Protection

Although cathodic protection is a viable method  of protecting reinforcing steel against corrosion in new construction, most installations to date have been to arrest corrosion in existing structures.  It should be noted, however, that the reinforcement in many offshore structures is connected to the cathodic protection system used on the exposed steel. This results in protection of the reinforcement and current densities of 0.5 to 1 .0 mA/sq.m. (0.05 to 0.1 mA/sq.ft) have been reported. Thus cathodic protection of the reinforcement, though unintentional. has been applied in several of the largest offshore structures.
