Concepts/Basics of Quality

Although quality is considered as a competitive prerequisite, yet despite of its acknowledged importance, it is probably most."mis-understood" concept. It is very unfortunate that people use the term "Quality" very loosely. Before we give a definition and explanation, it will be rather good to share your own views on quality.

In the space provided, write your own views and definition of quality of any commonly known product, viz. car, watch, etc. Also write how it can be measured.

Quality is used h a variety of ways. Frankly speaking, there is no clear definition of quality, viz. people simply try to relate quality with cost. To them, the best one or the quality item is one which is most costly. Sometimes, people refer it to grade for example, ilk of grade 1 or 2 or pen of A grade or B grade.

Many times, people try to relate it with some special feature of the product, viz. strong and tough, fire-proof, etc.

From customer's point of view quality is often associated with its value, usefulness or even the price attached. But when the same entity, i.e. quality is viewed from manufacturer's point of view, it is associated with the conformance to specifications, i.e. with producing products according to design and  other specifications.

One of the accepted definitions of quality by Dr. J. M. Juran is "FITNESS FOR USE". According to Phil Crossly, noted Quality Guru,  "Quality is Conformance to requirements". Both these definitions dictate that Quality is a relative parameter and that is why it varies from person to person. By these practical definitions of quality we find that quality is a measure of how closely a product or service meets the specified standards laid for it. If the product or service lives up to the expectations, i.e. specified standards, it is of higher quality otherwise not.
