Organisation Structure and Compatibility

People, structure, technology, and environment are the basic elements individually and collectively determining the level of success achieved by any organisation. Again, structure of an organisation will closely interact with its people, technology and environment. Organisational design aid structure is a powerful way to influence the behaviour of individuals and groups. Organisational structure is the result of human thought. It is designed by managers and is therefore changeable. Management will have identify and group the work logically; define and delegate authority and responsibility; and establish relationships between positions and units lo facilitate harmonious team work. In order to make intelligent and appropriate design choices, you require the knowledge of alternative structure. Given this knowledge, you can select the system or subsystem design that best fits the organisation's environment and context. This is what this unit intends to provide. 

Objectives 

After studying this unit, you should be able to 

  • define the basic accepts and techniques of organisation structure. 
  • apply the principles of organising while designing the overall organisation and its subsystems, 
  • describe the concept and need of coordination in an organisation, 
  • discuss the strategic factors and their influence on organisation structure, 
  • identify the major determinants of an effective organisation structure, and 
  • evaluate the design alternative available in practice and their suitability in terms of organisational compatibility with situational forces.
