Each piece of construction equipment is specifically designed by the manufacturer to perfumer certain mechanical operations. While each major type of equipment has different operational characteristics, it is not always obvious which machine is most suitable for a particular work.
The task of project manager is to match the right machine or combination of machines to the job at hand after studying the plans and specifications, assessing the quantum of work involved. and if possible, by visiting the project site. Apart from this, the operational (performance) characteristics of various equipment also help project planner in visualizing that how he can best employ the available equipment to accomplish the work.

- discuss the performance characteristics of earth moving equipment, road equipment, concrete placing equipment and centrifugal pumps.
