Field Repair and Maintenance Facilities

The static field repair and maintenance workshop should be well equipped for meeting the day to day needs of the entire fleet of equipment spread over the whole work area. Besides adequate covered space, there should be open space around for parking equipment needing repairs and adjustments. An enclosure is desirable with the field stores and tool depot housed inside. The workshop floor should preferably be of concrete and the workshop should be supplied with electric power, lighting, water and compressed air. Tools and other equipment fitted inside should include benches, vices, cupboards, racks, portable electric drills, grinders, jacks and crowbars and special tools to suit the type.of equipment which may be received for repairs. Lifting tackle with gantry or mobile crane and A-frames should also be included. The welding equipment should include portable electric welding equipment and oxy-acetylene cutting, welding and brazing plant. A smith's hearth and forge should also be provided. A small foundry will be a great help in making quick field repairs undertaken by the workshop.

The mobile workshop mounted on a truck is usually fitted with a small lathe and a pillar drilling machine, a fitter's bench, a saw, lifting gear and welding outfit. The power to drive the machines may be derived from the main engine of the truck or another smaller engine may be mounted on the truck for supplying the workshop needs.

Extensive repairs, such as complete overhauls should be undertaken in the central workshop, also termed as the base workshop. Usually, such major overhauls may be needed after about 2000 hours or more of machine operation.
