Matrix Form Modifications

Normally, in a matrix organisation, project manager directly reports to general manager. This form is suitable for relatively small and medium size construction firms having minimum number of ongoing projects at a time. GM directly interacts with project and functional managers. He has enough time to coordinate and resolve conflicts between project and functional managers and between managers of different projects.

As the organisation grows in size and number of projects, a new position of Director of Projects is created to administer all project management. The subdivision of functions become necessary in order to control large projects. For large projects, Matrix layering can be tried. It is defined as creating a matrix within a matrix. For example, we may have an overall organisational matrix and each division or department can have its own internalised  matrix. Matrix layering can be formal, informal or a mix of formal and informal organisation units, e.g. workflow matrix, authority matrix, information flow matrix, leadership matrix, reporting matrix, design matrix and construction matrix etc.
