Need and Direction of Restructuring the Construction Organisation

The different organisational patterns of organisation for different construction activities broadly adopted by different regions of the world were mainly developed for local needs and constraints of the place and time. These are found to be unproductive main efficient when faced with global market environment of high competition. The rapid change in technology and knowledge explosion have added to the urgency for a system change and remodelling.

In the international market, the construction activity is taken up with utmost precision through specialised system. The construction organisation of today to meet the needs and demand of tomorrow shall have expertise and competence in all the construction activity requirements such as :

  • Design and Research capabilities,
  • Sound decision making structure for planning, organising, staffing, controlling and directing,
  • Sound and efficient management information system, and
  • Behavioural techniques for liaising with labour force.

With the acceptability of IS0 9004 models throughout the world, it is important to bring such changes in the Indian construction market also. IS0 9004 stresses upon the qualitative system in management. The construction industry has a tremendous potential in promoting economic development,  increasing social welfare, removing poverty and backwardness, providing employment and earning foreign exchange. India has a large technical and managerial force, and a large pool of skilled and unskilled labour force. What is needed to put all these elements in a well defined efficient and productive structure for Indian construction industry to make it competitive in international market.
