Pitfall No. 9 : Assume that Done is Done

One may have a clearly defined project plan, involved all the right people in turning the vision into a reality, done a superb job of rolling the program out across the enterprise, but stopping the program can still cause computerisation to fail for a variety of reasons including :

  • inadequate System Administration : Computerised systems involve a complex combination of hardware, software, and communications technologies. These types of programs require a significant amount of system support. If one is asking the materials teams to commit to managing their operations through a computerised system, then they have to be given a fast, easy way to get answers to system questions or help with technical problems.
  • No Formal Training for New Employees : As mentioned earlier, the formal training plays a vital role in implementation of any computerisation project. In fact, one should count on any new employee requiring the same level of training as the existing personnel.
  • No Planned Enhancements/Upgrades : Materials re-engineering is not an event, it is an ongoing process. Failing to plan for additional functionality to the computerisation programs or upgrading hardware or communications capabilities, will result in the computerised system becoming obsolete in a few years.
